Everyone needs time to be alone. Hanging out with friends and brothers or sisters is great but you can't do it all the time. Maybe you've just had an argument with your parents or split up with your boyfriend or girlfriend and need time and space to think. Or you need your own desk and space to do your homework in the evenings. Or you just want to sit down and watch a DVD without people disturbing you.
Many
children are lucky enough to have their own rooms
or at least their own houses or flats in which to
find privacy. But others are unable to be alone.
Hundreds of millions of families around the world
live in homes no bigger than the size of a bathroom
in the UK.
As
well as being unpleasant, this lack of privacy can
also have safety and health implications.
Living in such cramped conditions increases the
likelihood of catching a nasty illness or disease
such as HIV/Aids.
While a lack of private washing and changing facilities
leaves girls and boys at risk of sexual assault.
