From football in the playground to PlayStation with your mates, playing is one of the best and most important things about being young. We may be forced to spend time doing things we don't like, but we also spend a lot of time having fun. And the lessons we learn while messing around friends are just as important as those taught in the classrooms.

However, millions of children are denied the opportunity to play as a result of poverty, conflict, discrimination and abuse. Kids like to play at being soldiers, but for thousands of children these war games are all too real. An estimated 30,000 children are believed to be fighting in dangerous armed conflicts today. While hundreds of millions of kids worldwide are also denied their childhood right, forced to work during their spare time in order to raise money for their families.

The animations on this page produced by Year 8 students explore the importance of play and having fun and address the plight of the millions of kids denied this right.

What do you think?

How much time every day do you spend playing? And what lessons do you think you learn from having fun in your spare time? Is down-time more important than your time in the classroom?
